The Fresh View: Michelle Obama's Lunch Blues

Image
There is an issue with the new school lunch requirements. As where I find no issue with the fat and calorie requirements, thus smaller portions. The requirement that all grain products must be 100 percent whole-grain rich is simply absurd. As someone who cooks a lot and eats even more things like whole wheat pasta takes more time and effort to cook properly. Also, there is the grit factor, whole wheat pasta has a grittiness to it that most kids will not easily take to. How many kids ask their parents for wheat bread in the school lunches from home, when I was a kid I would say it was never and I am sure kids tastes have not changed that much since that time. Kids school lunches must become healthier this is a given, but it must be done in a smarter, more cost effective, more kid friendly way.

Defense of Marriage Act struck down

Image
The Supreme Court this week struck down the Defense of Marriage Act( DOMA ), opening the door to Gay Marriage nationwide.  The 5-4 ruling was not a sweeping ruling that legalized gay marriage across the nation. The ruling simply gave access to at least 1,000 different federal benefits and the ability to file joint tax returns by gay couples who have been married in states that allow gays to marry, by striking down section 3 of DOMA. It might not have been a sweeping ruling, but it opened the door to lawsuits to fight gay marriage bans in the states at the federal level. Anthony Kennedy, writing for the majority said DOMA violated gay couples right to equal protection guaranteed by the 5th Amendment.  On the same day the High Court also made a decision on California's Prop. 8, that banned gay marriage in the state. The  Court said the supporters of Prop. 8 had no standing to appeal the earlier ruling and ordered the lower court to reverse the decision th...

Hero or Traitor: Edward Snowden

Image
Let me set a scene for you, if you will:  Imagine the year is 2006 here in the United States. During the "war on terror" and someone was giving our intelligence on the terrorist we had in our sites to these same terrorists. Then imagine that this person was an American aiding the terrorist with information he stole from NSA computer systems. What would you call this person? Traitor, crook or UN-American? Of what crime would you accuse him? Treason, theft or espionage?  Now say this man was named Edward Snowden. Do the labels from the previous scene still hold? Or does your view change based on your political views of the moment. Sure Mr. Snowden exposed NSA spying on everyday Americans. This is something that has been widely known for many of the last years since 9/11. Still it is understandable that the masses where oblivious to this spying. So it is good to have this out in the open to the entire nation, not just those buried in the political s...

Obama directing the IRS?

Image
As we continue to wade through some of the most recent "scandals" the most concerning to Americans is the IRS reportedly targeting conservative groups. It has been suggested that this is a sign of a government run amuck and out of control. Sen. Ted Cruz has even called for the abolishment of the IRS. Is this most recent "scandal" really a "scandal" or simply a story thrown out of proportion? Lets take a closer look at the facts before you make a decision on this "scandal." A History lesson:  Before the 1950's 501(c)4's were required to be exclusively to better the social welfare of a community or the nation. This was to prevent these organizations from using their tax free funds to influence elections. This was changed under President Ike from exclusively to primarily to promote social welfare. Thus, allowing these groups to use their funds to make political ads and donations to candidates without having to identify who i...

Misplaced Outrage: Marines lose a hot meal!

Image
Recently a decision made by the Marine Corps involving hot meals for the Marines stationed at Camp Leatherneck set off a firestorm of controversy from the left and right. Many Marines stationed at Camp Leatherneck and their families back in the U.S. are angry at this change and rightfully so.  "This boils my skin. One of my entire shifts will go 6.5 hours without a meal. If we need to cut back on money I could come up with 100 other places... Instead, we will target the biggest contributor to morale. I must be losing my mind. What is our senior leadership thinking? I just got back from flying my ass off and in a few days, I will not have a meal to replenish me after being away for over 9 hours.” Said one Camp Leatherneck based Marine in an email shared to NBC News, he chose to stay off the record. Many conservatives are trying to pin all the blame on President Obama and even liberals appear up in arms over these changes, but before one goes placing blame where it may not belong...

CISPA: 4th Amendment under attack??

Image
Fourth AMENDMENT: " The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized . " Last week while Americans were focused mainly on the disasters in Boston, MA and West, TX. The U.S. House voted 288-127 to pass the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act , better known by its acronym CISPA.  CISPA is aimed to preventing cyber attacks but could it be infringing on your 4th amendment rights? Proponents of CISPA say this bill would make it easier to detect a cyber attack before it became an issue or prevent them altogether  They cite recent cyber attacks by North Korea(DPRK) and even China as reason for CISPA. Others say it could even help gather intel to help prevent futu...

The heroes of Boston and West

Image
(via people.com) First responders rescue little boy in aftermath of Boston bombings It is the end of a very rough week here in our United States. The events of this week between the Boston bombing that killed 3 and left many many more horribly injured. As well as the devastating explosion that leveled a large part of the small town of West, Texas that killed 14 people and injured a large number of folks. This has been a tough week, but as we Americans always do we'll pull together and get through these tragedies as a family. This is just what we do. Let's not focus on the bad, let's shift our sights to the heroes of Boston and West. The first responders to both of these events. People of all kinds civilians, EMTs, military and police. Some of these folks gave their lives to help their fellow Americans. When the chips were down these folks ran in simply to save lives. In Boston spectators and runners alike jumped in to rescue people. In We...

"We got him!"

"We got him!"   This was the headline out of Boston last night. This headline brought a sense of relief to residents of Boston and everyone across the U.S.. The speculation has now moved on to the why and who else may have been involved if any. To this point the authorities seem confident that these two acted alone. Of course this is still an ongoing investigation if things change we will update this post. We must not jump to any speculation we here from the mainstream media. Nor should we jump to a conclusion of why they did this until all facts have come out. Here at FPV blog we are not going to get into all the Alex Jones type conspiracy theories. We are trying to find all facts we can before posting anything on the bombing. There has been much misinformation from the news on this subject, mostly caused by CNNs John King not vet...

GUN VIOLENCE VICTIMS DESERVE A VOTE!!!

Image
Many in the US seem to think their gun rights are under attack. They feel that the federal government is trying to take their Second Amendment rights away. Even more seem to think that president Obama's call for gun control reform is simply code for some sort of socialist power grab. This is not the case by any stretch of the imagination. Many appear to just simply being misinformed on what the president has really asked for.  President Obama never called for anyone to have their guns taken from their homes. However, he did call for a ban on the manufacture of assault weapons and limit on the size of magazines. As most know an assault weapons ban is nothing new to the US. One was in effect between the years of 1994 and 2004 when the Bush administration allowed to lapse. During that 10 year period we did not see the end of the world as gun owners knew it, the federal government didn't come in and steal everyone's guns, and in some instances crimes involving these pa...

Decriminalize Marijuana? Part 2

Many view addicts as losers who can not control themselves or are bad people in general. This view is completely off-base. There are many factors that may lead a person down the path of addiction. In this segment of Decriminalize marijuana? We will look at a few of these factors. The Mayo clinic says there are two main factors to drugs use including marijuana. These factors are Genetic and environmental. Some people's genetic make-up make them more likely to become addicted to one substance or another. For others family norms and peer groups can lead them to try drugs for the first time. There is also a link between drug use and mental health disorders. Many try illegal drugs to self-medicate things like depression. Also, some have tried the drugs from the big pharmaceutical companies for depression or anxiety and they have either failed or had very unpleasant side-effects. So many try marijuana and it can lessen the effects of depression and anxiety and for many with few...

Should we decriminalize Marijuana?

The battle for and against the decriminalization of marijuana has been raging for years. The idea has been gaining support from both sides of the aisle in congress as well as from every walk of life on Main Street. The fight would appear to be at critical mass with states such as Colorado passing laws decriminalizing or legalizing cannabis for personal use. Recently, Rand Paul (R-KY)has come out in support of decriminalization. Saying folks should not have their lives ruined due making such choices early in life. “I don't want to promote that but I also don't want to put people in jail who make a mistake," Paul explained. "There are a lot of young people who do this and then later on in their twenties they grow up and get married and they quit doing things like this. I don't want to put them in jail and ruin their lives." Paul said. The Senator from Kentucky makes a good argument here. Many folks who smoke marijuana are young and make some bad choices ...
